When did you know you wanted to do hair?
I'm not sure if I ever had that "the light bulb turned on" feeling about doing hair. I have always been very artistic, crafty and creative. My passion as a teenager and young adult was to be an artist. At the time I had a neighbor who owned a salon and she was in need for help and encouraged me to think about being a stylist. So, for me it has been a growing passion over the years. Instead of getting bored and disinterested in hair, I have actually gone the other direction and continually want to learn more.
How long have you been doing color?
I've been doing color for 26 years.
How would you describe your approach to doing hair color?
It changes each time a client sits in my chair. Whether it is a repeat client or a new client, I always start from the beginning. I try to never assume I know what they want or assume that they want the same thing each time they come in.
What inspires your creativity?
It can come from a lot of different avenues. Sometimes it can come from a person's personality, skin tone, shape of their face or even their cut. The change of seasons is always a big factor. Brighter, lighter tones in the summer, warmer, richer tones in fall and cooler, subtler tones in winter.
What advice would you give someone considering coloring their hair for the first time?
Make sure the stylist is educated in all of the different types of haircolor; demi-permenant, permanent, highlighting or a combination of several. Make sure that you feel you have been given all of the options, understand the options and what type of maintenance it involves.
How do you customize a hair color service for each and every client?
Most definitely. Never assume you know what the client is after.
What's your approach to returning haircolor clients?
As I said before: always analyze and consult before assuming.
Describe your personal style:
I like softer, movable styles with depth and dimension
